Affirm Black Women Portrait Series: Ketanji Brown Jackson

“…I have dedicated my career to ensuring that the words engraved on the front of the Supreme Court building— ‘Equal Justice Under Law’—are a reality and not just an ideal.” — Ketanji Brown Jackson

On April 7, 2022 Ketanji Brown Jackson became the first Black woman confirmed to the United States Supreme Court.

"It has taken 232 years and 115 prior appointments for a Black woman to be selected to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States, but we've made it! We've made it — all of us," said Jackson at a White House ceremony celebrating the historic moment.

Shirley Troutman, a judge on New York’s highest court, and the 116th member of her court too, noted that while Jackson’s appointment is important, “It is most important that she shall not be the last."
